TORONTO — Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath met with young Ontarians at a crowded townhall meeting Wednesday, where she heard about challenges young people wanted to discuss, and answered questions about her plans to convert student loans to grants, create 27,000 new paid co-op and internship spaces and make life more affordable for everyone.
“For generations, Ontario has been a province with the opportunities and resources to allow millions of families to build a great life. But young people today are facing skyrocketing costs of living, outrageous student debt, and a changing economy where good-paying, stable jobs are becoming harder and harder to find,” said Horwath.
“Decades of Conservative and Liberal governments have cut and privatized the services and supports that families depend on to build a great life. Wynne has let young people in this province down, year after year, and Ford’s promise to cut over $6 billion will make things so much worse.
“We can’t leave this emerging generation with privatized health care and stripped back services. They deserve so much better than that.”
Horwath, joined by Davenport NDP candidate Marit Stiles, says government shouldn’t be making money on the backs of students, and promised that an NDP government would stop collecting interest on any existing student loans – paying back what has already been charged to students and grads that still have loans outstanding.
